Compostable is a regulated claim, not a mood. These are the certifications we use across the range, the labs that issue them, and what they require. Not every SKU holds every mark — read the product listing.

    Verified by BPI

    Read the standard

    Independent, third-party verification that a product meets ASTM D6400 and is suitable for industrial composting facilities that accept BPI-certified material. The BPI logo is what many US composting operators look for. It is required by some municipal organics programs and ignored by others — always check the local rule.

    ASTM D6400

    Industrial compostability

    Read the standard

    The American specification for plastics designed to compost in municipal and industrial composting facilities. ASTM D6400 is the prerequisite for BPI certification and for the term "compostable" being used legally on packaging across most of the United States and Canada.

    What it requires

    • Biodegradation: ≥ 90% within 180 days
    • Disintegration: no more than 10% > 2 mm at the end of the test
    • Tested at 58 °C ± 2 °C
    • Plant-growth and heavy-metal toxicity bounded

    OK Compost HOME

    Home composting

    Read the standard

    TÜV Austria's home-compostability mark. Verifies disintegration and biodegradation in cooler, less controlled backyard compost (typically 68–86 °F), not the 130–140 °F of industrial facilities. It applies only to SKUs that list it, and it still requires an active compost pile — not a kitchen caddy left in a cupboard.

    What it requires

    • Disintegration: ≥ 90% within 6 months
    • Biodegradation: ≥ 90% within 12 months
    • No heavy metals, no eco-toxicity
    • Test temperature: 68–86 °F (ambient)

    EN 13432

    European compostability

    Read the standard

    The harmonized European Standard for packaging recoverable through composting and biodegradation. EN 13432 is the legal benchmark that defines what "compostable" means in the EU, and it is the basis for the seedling logo you see on certified compostable products. Tested against industrial composting conditions (around 136 °F).

    What it requires

    • Disintegration: ≥ 90% within 12 weeks
    • Biodegradation: ≥ 90% within 6 months
    • No negative effect on compost quality
    • Heavy metals tested below threshold

How we hold ourselves to it

A logo on a bag isn’t enough.

Certifications are easy to claim and difficult to maintain. These are the three practices we use to make sure ours stay real.

    Third-party verified

    Certifications are issued by independent bodies. We recertify on the schedule those programs require, and we can share current certificates with wholesale buyers.

    Annual recertification

    Standards and suppliers change. We keep certificates current and will send the latest reports rather than relying on a logo that might be out of date.

    Full chain of custody

    Lot documentation and current test reports are available on request to wholesale buyers.
